Saddam Hussein was omnipresent in Baghdad. It was hard to ignore his stern face looking down from billboards, statues, memorial plaques, festive paintings and colorful mosaics. Saddam took on multiple personalities. A stern commander, a benevolent father of all Iraqis, a devout Muslim, a smart dressed statesman. The starting gun went off for the desecration of Saddam when Iraqis pulled down his statue in front of the Palestine Hotel the first week in April 2003. Within a few days, most portraits in town were damaged or at least partly defaced.The first two days I documented most of the portraits. Within a week, most of them were already gone. Art is wherever you look

As a regular contributor for design magazine such as DAMn and I.D, Voeten has a keen eye for art, design and pop culture, even in war zones. In Iraq, he recognized the esthetic value of the destroyed Saddam Hussein portraits. In the DR Congo, he was fascinated by the simple yet effective design of the chukudu, a wooden scooter made for transporting heavy loads in a hostile environment.

One of his first series, shot in 1989 is a documentary of Manhattan based street artist Konstantin Bokov.
